Jane S., originally from rural Pennsylvania, was first officially diagnosed as “Manic-Depressive” when she was thirty-one, after she was twenty-one months sober, but the symptoms had begun to appear when she had her first drink at fourteen. She was given “shock treatments” for her illness years before the official diagnosis.
Now retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, she lives in Central Pennsylvania with her husband and her grandson Jeffrey. Her son Andrew lives a few miles away in Lancaster. She has been sober since October 1970 and on successful Lithium therapy since July 1972.
